292,692 plastic bottles collected, 76 cartons of Coca-Cola drinks gifted, and 7 winners emerging tell the story of the University of Lagos Sustainability Challenge 2.0 for the month of April, 2024.
At the UNILAG Green Hub, on Tuesday, April 14, 2024, outstanding participants in the ongoing challenge were recognised and rewarded for their commitment to the cause of keeping the University of Lagos free of plastic pollution.
In his welcome remarks, the Programme Coordinator of the challenge, Dr. Abdulganiyu Adelopo, extolled the consistency of the winners. He revealed that, cumulatively, over a million bottles (1, 295, 475) have been tracked and collected since the launch of the campaign in 2023. He also disclosed that at the rate of participation by members of the University community, the Sustainability Challenge is well on the way to achieving its target of collecting 1.5 million bottles by June 2024.



The Coordinator of the Works and Physical Planning Unit of the University of Lagos, Mr. Niyi Ayeye, was on ground to present prizes to the winners. He commended the performance of participants, as shown in the numbers, and encouraged more members of the University community to join the environmental sustainability challenge.
The winners for the month of April were: Mrs Joy Eniola, who made an individual collection 50,917 bottles and was rewarded with seven (7) packs of Coca-Cola drinka; Mr. Tunji Lanre, Mrs. Yetunde Situ; Mrs Bamidele Esther; Dr. Azeez Oladele; and Ms. Sumayyah Adelakun, who has retained the enviable position of the leading student participant in the challenge.
A Year 3 student of Marine Sciences, Ms. Adeleke Odunayo, won the weekly Essay Contest of the Challenge with her entry titled, “A Greener You, a Healthier World”.



A mega event is being planned for the month of June 2024 as a watershed moment for the University of Lagos Environmental Sustainability Challenge, and you sure do not want to miss it.
The Challenge continues till the end of the Semester.
