Two members of an inter-university research team funded by a grant seed of the African Engineering and Technology Network (AFRETEC): Professor Sarath Tennakoon (Carnegie Mellon University, Rwanda) and Professor Siphila Wanjiku Mumenya (University of Nairobi) have arrived the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to share progress report of their on-going research.
Other members of the four-man research team are: Dr. Babatunde Sawyer and Dr. Abdulganiyu Adelopo, both from University of Lagos. The project titled: Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) Techniques for Extracting Carbon from Landfill Waste for Renewable Energy aims is to utilise Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a digital predictive tool to assess the potential of resource use from landfills in Africa.
Led by Dr. Abdulganiyu Adelopo (Principal Investigator), the delegation kicked off their activities with a visit to the Office of International Relations, Partnership and Prospects (IRPP), where they were received by the Director, Prof. Ismail Ibrahim, who also doubles as the AFRETEC Coordinator at UNILAG.







Thereafter, they proceeded to the Works and Physical Planning Unit, where members of the team shared their progress report in Work Packages.
The research team will be at the Olusosun Landfill, Ojota, Lagos on Tuesday, March 18, 2025 for a interaction with stakeholders on the on-going project.
