The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, FAS, commenced familiarization visits to Faculties, Units, Centres and Institutes of the university on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 with the Faculties of Management Science and Law.
The first port of call for the Vice-Chancellor who was accompanied by other members of the management team, was the Faculty of Management Sciences where she was received by the Dean, Heads of Departments, Professors as well as other teaching and non-teaching staff members of the faculty.
The Dean, Professor Emmanuel Oyatoye, used the opportunity to congratulate Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, FAS, on her appointment as the 13th Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos and for being the first female to be so appointed.
He made a submission on the activities, achievements and challenges of the faculty with an appeal for the university management’s support to fuel the wheels of administrative and academic excellence in the Faculty of Management Sciences.
In her response, the Vice Chancellor acknowledged the contributions of the Faculties to the UNILAG brand stressing that her goal as Vice-Chancellor is to build a league of team players across the rank and file of the university’s workforce.
On some of the concerns raised by the Dean, Prof. Ogunsola emphasized the importance of creativity in efforts to move the university forward. She expressed readiness to maximally explore the 30 percent curriculum control granted by the National Universities Commission (NUC), to accommodate developmental visions in line with the university’s quest to promote entrepreneurship, innovations and self-development.
According to her, academic curriculum must align with the contemporary needs of the town, particularly as more emphasis must be placed on self-development, productivity and employability as against certification only.
Action later shifted to the Faculty of Law where the Vice-Chancellor and the entire management team were hosted by the Dean, Prof. Ige Bolodeoku who also addressed the Vice-Chancellor on the activities, attainments and challenges of the faculty.
The Vice-Chancellor was particularly pleased with the impacts and contributions of the Faculty to the Nigerian legal system. She identified the sterling performances of students of the faculty at the 2022 final Bar Examinations of the Nigeria Law School as a major feat which has boosted the brand and reputation of the University of Lagos.
Professor Ogunsola solicited the input of Eggheads in the faculty especially in the asset recovery efforts of the university. She also advocated the faculty’s support in reviewing all existing Memoranda of Understanding as well as drafting new ones with a view to protecting both the immediate and future interests of the university in all its engagements.
