UNILAG AI Club Clinches First Place in Africa at Umojahack 2021

At the just-concluded UmojaHack 2021, held from Saturday, March 27, 2021 to Sunday, March 28, 2021, the University of Lagos AI Club clinched the first place in the Beginner level in Africa. The Hackathon, organized by Zindi Africa, is aimed at building machine learning models to solve different problems. It was held virtually.

At the Beginner Level (Financial Resilience Challenge), the Team built a machine learning model aimed at providing insight into people’s financial behaviours and resilience. This was with a view of helping financial services providers tailor their services to give clients the best possible chance to achieve financial resilience.

The UNILAG AI club participated in the hackathon under the supervision of Dr. Victor Odumuyiwa, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computer Sciences, Faculty of Science and immediate past Acting Director, Centre for Information Technology and Systems (CITS).

It would be recalled that in 2020, the AI Club brought home the first prize in Nigeria at the first and second editions.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin, T. Ogundipe, FAS, on behalf of the Management, Senate, members of staff and students congratulates the UNILAG AI Club on this feat.
