On Saturday, August 1, 2026, the Nurudeen Alao Auditorium of the Distance Learning Institute (DLI), University of Lagos, came alive with colour, music, and the vibrant spirit of Nigeria’s diverse cultures as students, staff, and guests gathered for the 2026 Cultural Day and Trade Fair.
Held under the theme, “ One Campus, Many Roots: Celebrating Our Heritage and Empowering Our Enterprise ,” the annual event transformed the Institute into a lively cultural village where tradition met innovation. From colourful cultural attire and energetic dance performances to indigenous cuisines and thriving trade exhibitions, the celebration showcased the richness of Nigeria’s heritage while promoting unity, entrepreneurship, and cultural exchange.
The event attracted an impressive gathering of students, staff, traditional rulers, cultural organisations, and distinguished guests, all united by a shared appreciation of Nigeria’s cultural diversity. Among the royal fathers in attendance were HRH Alhaji Sulaiman Rabi’u, JP, Sarkin Kuje, Amuwo-Odofin LCDA and Speaker, Arewa Council of Chiefs in the 17 Southern States of Nigeria; and HRH Comrade P. Amb. Sani Salisu Danmuttaqa, Sarkin Samarin Yamma of the 17 Southern States of Nigeria and Leader, Northern Nigeria Traditional Youth Chiefs Council (Southern Nigeria). Their presence added prestige to the occasion and reinforced the event’s message of peaceful coexistence and national unity.
In her welcome address, the Director of DLI, Professor Risikat Dauda, described the celebration as a reflection of the University’s multicultural identity. She noted that while members of the DLI community come from different ethnic groups, languages, and traditions, they are united by a common pursuit of knowledge, excellence, and shared purpose.
According to her, the event serves as a reminder that diversity is one of the University’s greatest strengths, inspiring creativity, innovation, and mutual understanding. She added that the Trade Fair complements this objective by providing students and exhibitors with opportunities to showcase their products and services, build valuable networks, and explore new business opportunities.
The Director commended the Distance Learning Institute Students’ Association (DLISA) for sustaining the annual tradition and encouraged students to continue promoting programmes that foster cultural appreciation, social cohesion, and economic empowerment.
Also speaking at the event, the Dean, Student Affairs, Professor Johnson Agunsoye, commended the Distance Learning Institute for sustaining a programme that promotes cultural appreciation, national unity, and student development.
He described the Cultural Day and Trade Fair as more than a celebration of Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity, noting that it provides a platform for students to interact across ethnic and cultural boundaries, build lasting relationships, and develop skills beyond the classroom. He said such initiatives complement the University’s academic mission by nurturing responsible, innovative, and socially conscious graduates.
Professor Agunsoye encouraged students to remain proud ambassadors of their respective cultures while embracing the values of tolerance, inclusion, and peaceful coexistence. He also urged them to take advantage of the Trade Fair to showcase their creativity and entrepreneurial abilities, stressing that innovation and enterprise are essential qualities for success in today’s rapidly evolving world.
The Dean congratulated the organisers for putting together a colourful and impactful event and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to supporting programmes that enrich students’ overall learning experience and prepare them for leadership in society.
Delivering his remarks as the Special Guest of Honour and Chief Representative of Tiv Culture, the President of Mdzough U Tiv (Mutual Union of Tiv People), Lagos State Chapter, Engr. Dr. Theophilus T. Ukaa, FNSE, praised the organisers for creating a platform that celebrates Nigeria’s cultural diversity while encouraging enterprise among young people.
He described the theme of the event as a powerful reminder that Nigeria’s cultural differences are a source of strength rather than division, urging students to take pride in their heritage while embracing innovation and entrepreneurship as tools for personal growth and national development.
Beyond the speeches, the event featured captivating cultural performances, traditional music and dance, fashion displays, indigenous delicacies, and exhibitions by student entrepreneurs. The colourful atmosphere created opportunities for participants to connect across cultures, celebrate shared values, and support emerging businesses.
