UNILAG Hosts NUC Panels for Resource Verification of Proposed Geomatic Engineering & Hydrographic Surveying Programmes

Authorities of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Monday, February 9, 2026, received two panels from the National Universities Commission (NUC) for the resource verification exercise of the proposed Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Geomatic Engineering and Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Hydrographic Surveying programmes.

The NUC panels were formally received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Professor Bola Oboh, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS. Also present were the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mrs. V. Abosede Wickliffe; Director, Academic Planning Unit, Professor Mathew Olusoji Ilori; Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Abraham Adepoju Adewale Osinubi; Director, Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS), Professor Mary Odukoya; as well as senior academics from the Department of Surveying and Geo-Informatics, including the Head of Department, Professor Omogunloye.

The proposed B.Eng. in Geomatic Engineering is designed as an undergraduate programme within the University’s academic structure, while the M.Sc. in Hydrographic Surveying will be domiciled in the Institute of Maritime Studies. The programmes reflect the University’s strategic commitment to advancing maritime education, research, and professional training, particularly in geospatial and hydrographic sciences.

In her welcome remarks, Professor Oboh described the resource verification exercise as a critical regulatory requirement and an important self-evaluation process for the University. She noted that the exercise would help UNILAG consolidate its strengths, identify areas for improvement, and ensure adequate preparedness for the commencement of the programmes, potentially in the next academic session.

She also expressed the University’s appreciation to  NUC for its guidance and support, reaffirming UNILAG’s commitment to academic excellence and the delivery of globally competitive academic programmes.

The NUC panels were led by Professor Yusuf Dabari Mamman and Professor Abubakar D. Isha, who commended the University for its warm reception and level of preparedness.

They assured the University Management of a thorough, transparent, and objective verification process and expressed optimism that the exercise would lead to the successful approval and take-off of the proposed programmes.
