The University of Lagos Artificial Intelligence (AI) Club, on Thursday, July 2, 2020, received a million naira worth of AI books and a shelf to support the books as the prize for emerging the AI School of the Year during the AI BootCamp organized by Data Science Nigeria in November 2019.
The award, which was presented by officials of the Terragon Group and Data Science Nigeria, was presented in fulfilment of the ₦1 million prize earmarked for the purchase of books to set up an AI library to be situated at the Centre for Information Technology and Systems (CITS), University of Lagos (UNILAG).
The sponsor of the award, Terragon Group, is a technology marketing company specialised in aggregating and enriching difficult-to-source consumer data as well as generating measurable outcomes for telco’s, banks, and larger brands. The Group uses its on-demand marketing cloud platform, attribution software, and deep analytics capability to enable thoughtful, targeted omni-channel access to 100m+ mobile-first African consumers.
The Boot Camp organiser, Data Science Nigeria, is a non-profit organisation poised to develop Nigeria’s AI ecosystem and position the country as a world-class AI skill, research and outsourcing destination with opportunity to access 2-3% share of the estimated global Artificial Intelligence GDP contribution of up to $15.7 trillion by 2030.
In his remarks, the Acting Director, Centre for Information Technology and Systems (CITS), UNILAG, Dr. Victor Odumuyiwa, expressed gratitude to Data Science Nigeria and Terragon Group for their impactful contribution to knowledge and growth in Nigeria. He assured them that the students would make good use of the new books and conquer the world armed with knowledge, integrity and the drive to innovate. In addition, he encouraged organisations and individuals to make an habit of contributing to the advancement of education in the University as many highly rated universities around the world are funded chiefly by endowments from well meaning organisations and individuals.
To all students of the University of Lagos, this award serves as a reminder that they can attain the greatest of heights, all they have to do is be determined, be focused, train their minds right, feed their minds right and create wonders.
