University of Lagos alumnus and Computer Science Doctoral student at Boise State University, Tobi Popoola, has done the University proud by bagging the Inaugural Presidential Award and emerging first runner-up in the Health Track category at the 2020 Annual Idaho Entrepreneur Challenge (IEC) held on April 2, 2020.
At the competition, Tobi Popoola and his team pitched their idea on “Dermcare”, an app that connects people who have medical ailments to licensed medical doctors in Nigeria. The app is currently up and running with about 1,500 users in Nigeria.
Dermcare is a mobile/web app that has instant messaging and video call features to facilitate real-time communication between medical doctors and patients. The app allows medical practitioners to securely keep a patient’s medical history on the app while also providing a means for patients to pay their medical bills from their phones, thereby reducing the need for patients to be physically present in hospitals.
This year, the competition hosted by the Venture College in the College of Innovation and Design, Boise State University was held online via Zoom conferencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. As a way of recognition, the President of Boise State University, Dr. Marlene Tromp presented Tobi Popoola with the Inaugural Presidential Award, a new feature introduced this year.
The Competition afforded young entrepreneurs from all over Idaho, a state in the North-western United States of America, the opportunity to pitch their business start-up ideas to a panel of judges. The teams with the most promising ventures and small businesses got the chance to win seed money and services to help them advance their start-ups. Twenty-three teams from colleges and universities across the state competed in four tracks: Health and Wellness, Local services, Product and Technology.
Tobi Popoola emerged first runner-up in the Health track category.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS, on behalf of the Senate, Management, members of staff and students of the University of Lagos congratulates Tobi Popoola on this feat.
