CP Jimoh Commends UNILAG’s Security Architecture, Calls Campus Safety Key to National Peace

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, has commended the University of Lagos for its robust security architecture and sustained peaceful academic environment, describing the institution as a model of how effective campus security contributes to national stability.

The Commissioner gave the commendation on Thursday, December 18, while speaking at the End-of-the-Year Annual Lecture and Thanksgiving Programme of the University of Lagos Security Unit, held at the Jelili Adebisi Omotola Multipurpose Hall ‘C’.

Delivering the lecture themed The Standard Campus Security: The Standard Peace of the Nation,” CP Jimoh emphasized that campus security should be viewed as a national priority rather than merely an institutional responsibility, noting that tertiary institutions serve as incubators for the nation’s future leaders.

According to him, “The peace and security of the nation are only as strong as the peace within its institutions of learning. When campuses are secure, orderly, and well-managed, they produce graduates who become responsible leaders and citizens.”

He stressed that infrastructure within learning environments remains a critical starting point for effective security, explaining that adequate lighting, power supply, and functional facilities significantly enhance the protection of lives and property.

“Imagine attempting to secure a campus without functional power or proper lighting, especially given the current realities. Security operations are most effective when the environment supports visibility, surveillance, and rapid response,”.

To further illustrate the influence of environment on security outcomes, CP Jimoh cited the example of a vehicle developing a fault in Bourdillon, Ikoyi, compared with a similar incident around the Oshodi axis.

“Which of these vehicles is more likely to be vandalized before the owner returns? The difference lies entirely in the environment,” he explained, reinforcing his position that security is deeply shaped by context and preparedness.

The Commissioner also highlighted the importance of security personnel welfare, deployment of modern technology, intelligence-driven operations, and sound institutional policies as essential elements of sustainable campus security.

He praised the University’s management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, for its commitment to strengthening the institution’s security framework.

His words “Since my appointment as Commissioner of Police over ten months ago, I have not had cause to intervene in incidents of riots or violent clashes within this university. That speaks volumes about the effectiveness of the measures in place,”.

The former Nigerian Police Force Public Relations Officer assured members of the University’s Security Unit of the continued support of the Nigerian Police Force while calling for collective responsibility among stakeholders to sustain peace and stability on campus.

Earlier in her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola OON, FAS, represented by the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Abraham Osinubi, expressed appreciation to members of the Security Unit for their dedication and professionalism.

She urged them to continue adopting innovative and proactive security strategies, reaffirming the University’s resolve to remain a safe and inclusive academic environment.

According to her, the University of Lagos is committed to being “a safe haven where no one is harassed or oppressed and where everyone is treated equally, irrespective of race, tribe, or religion; a true place of all.

The Chairman of the occasion, Major General E.O. Oshunsan, represented by Colonel C.P. Enihuando, applauded the initiative of the Security Unit and described the programme as a strategic platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration with security experts.

He noted that strong partnerships between academic institutions and security agencies are crucial to building confidence and preventing security challenges before they escalate.

In his remarks, the Coordinator of the University of Lagos Security Unit, Mr. Omotosho, expressed appreciation to the Commissioner of Police and other stakeholders for their continued support and collaboration with the University.

He noted that the peaceful atmosphere enjoyed on campus is the result of deliberate planning, teamwork, and the unwavering backing of the University Management.

Mr. Omotosho reaffirmed the Security Unit’s commitment to professionalism, vigilance, and continuous improvement, stressing that security remains a shared responsibility. He assured the University community that the Unit would continue to adopt modern, intelligence-driven, and proactive strategies to sustain peace and safety across the campus.

A panel session further enriched the programme, examining emerging security concerns and practical solutions for safer campuses. Panelists included the Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Musa Adebayo Obalola; Deputy Commissioner of Police Dayo Aninbiseyin; Deputy Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr. Bamgbose; and Public Commentator, Mr. Afolabi Akinola.

Anchored by Mr. Adebayo Salau, the panel explored security issues relating to policy reforms, student engagement strategies, inter-agency collaboration, and technology-driven security models.

The event attracted dignitaries from various walks of life, including the member of the 10th Assembly representing Lagos Mainland Constituency II, Hon. Shabi Rasheed Adebola Adekola and a former Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, who served as the Father of the Day, marking the programme as a significant contribution to national security discourse within the academic space.
