The University of Lagos has once again demonstrated its leadership in legal education and competitive advocacy as the Faculty of Law Mooting Society emerged first place at the 6th edition of the Cape Town Convention Moot Competition, the first time the globally recognised competition has been hosted in Nigeria.
Previously held in countries including Ireland, England, and Singapore, the Cape Town Convention Moot attracts some of the most brilliant young legal minds from universities around the world. This year’s Nigerian edition saw strong participation from several law faculties nationwide, but it was UNILAG that set the pace and claimed the crown.
Representing the University with distinction were members of the Mooting Society at the Faculty of Law: Daniel Falodun, Michael Adedayo, Adam Odutolu, Tovia Ojeabuo, Divine-Favour Odetunde, and Adeoluwakiishi Adesulure. Their outstanding advocacy, quick thinking, and mastery of legal principles reflected the Faculty’s enduring culture of excellence and the unmistakable Akoka spirit.

The Grand Finale, which held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at the Federal High Court, Abuja, featured a distinguished panel comprising Hon. Justice B. F. Nyako, Hon. Justice J. K. Omotosho, and Hon. Justice J. O. Abdulmalik. Representatives from the Cape Town Convention Academic Project and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Agency were also in attendance.
In their remarks, the Cape Town Convention representatives commended the UNILAG team, noting that they performed “favourably well with some of the best universities in the world,” including global academic giants such as Cambridge and Oxford. This acknowledgment reinforces the University’s standing as a cradle for world-class intellectuals and future leaders.

Speaking on the achievement, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Abiola Sanni, expressed pride in the team and gratitude to the dedicated staff whose support and mentorship shaped the victory. He gave special recognition to the Faculty Adviser, Dr. Issa Adedokun, for his unwavering commitment to raising competitive advocates. He also extended the appreciation to Prof. Wale Olawoyin, SAN; Prof. Hakeem Olaniyan; and Dr. Ihuoma Illobinso, whose contributions were instrumental in preparing the team.
This victory is a testament to the University of Lagos’ continued commitment to academic excellence, global relevance, and the development of confident, competent trailblazers.
