UNILAG Emerge First in Nigeria at Africa’s biggest Inter-University Machine Learning Hackathon

Students of the University of Lagos participated in the 2020 edition of the Africa Inter-University Machine Learning Hackathon tagged UmojaHack, which was organized by Zindi Africa and took place on Saturday, March 21, 2020.

About 72 Universities participated in the competition all over Africa with a total of 796 teams.

The Hackathon, aimed at building machine learning models, was in three categories:

Beginner Hack (Hotspots Fire Prediction Challenge) – the challenge here was to build a model that predicts fires in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Intermediate Hack (Xente Purchase Prediction Challenge) – the task here was to build models and solutions that will help Xente with target marketing and better catering for their customers’ need.

Advanced Hack (SAEON Invertebrate Classification Computer Vision Challenge) – the challenge was to build a model to identify species using computer vision.

The Hackathon took place online on the Zindi Africa platform with real-time monitoring of results. The UNILAG AI club participated in the competition from one of the laboratories at CITS under the supervision of their staff adviser – Dr. Victor Odumuyiwa.

At the end of the Hackathon, UNILAG AI club came first in Nigeria with the following performance in the three categories:

  1. Beginner Hack: UNILAG came 1st in Nigeria and 4th in Africa out of the 363 teams that participated. (UNILAG was no. 4 and 5 on the leader board)
  2. Intermediate Hack: UNILAG came 3rd in Nigeria and 11th in Africa out of 227 teams that participated (UNILAG was no. 11 on the leader board).
  3. Advanced Hack: UNILAG came 1st in Nigeria and 3rd in Africa out of 206 teams that participated. (UNILAG was no. 3 on the leader board)

UNILAG was represented by a total of 8 teams comprising of about 28 students as shown below:
