On Friday, November 8, 2019, the University of Lagos Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, received Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and CEO of Twitter, and the founder and CEO of Square at his Office at the Senate House, University of Lagos, Nigeria.
Jack Dorsey is visiting Africa and Nigeria for the first time. He and his team visited the University of Lagos to learn from its students, faculty, community etc. to know how better to serve the Nigerian Twitter community.
The Twitter team’s visit was in three (3) phases. First, we received the lovely duo, Kirin and Svetlana, who loved the campus environment and were amazed to learn about our Youth Coder Application Development program for girls between ages 11 and 14.
Thereafter, Jack Dorsey, Twitter CEO; Kayvon Beykpour, Head of Twitter Product; Parag Agrawal, Chief Technology Officer at Twitter Inc.; Michael Montano, Head of Engineering; Teju (TJ) Adeshola, Head of U.S. Sports, Twitter; Sierra & Ann joined the team at Vice Chancellor’s Office, where they were warmly welcomed by Management Team.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Toyin Ogundipe, informed the guests of the University’s many feats. In response, Jack shared his team’s reason of visiting the University to learn and improve the company’s product and services.
The second phase of Twitter team’s visit to UNILAG was an interactive session with students and staff of the University at the Senate Chamber, Senate House, University of Lagos.
Here, questions were asked about cyber bullying, twitter services, internship opportunities for UNILAG students and African students at large. The Twitter Team assured the gathering of their drive towards inclusiveness, to get a reasonable representation of twitter users in their team and to work on some of the concerns raised by students and staff of the University.
In the course of the interaction, Jack got a few students to share what excites them about studying and gave some business advice.
