The African Engineering and Technology (AFRETEC) Network at the University of Lagos is proud to announce and invite applications to the UNILAG Doctoral Academy, a five-day intensive training programme which will hold from Monday, May 26 to Friday, May 30, 2025.
This transformative five-day bootcamp is designed to empower emerging scholars with the skills, knowledge, and leadership capacity to drive innovation, research excellence, and real-world impact for Africa’s development.
With the theme, “Africa in a Digital World,” the Academy aims to equip doctoral students with the mindset and tools to harness technology, think critically, and lead solutions to the continent’s pressing challenges.

Who Should Apply?
- PhD candidates currently enrolled in any discipline at the University of Lagos or at approved partner institutions. Preference will be given to those in Engineering and Sciences. For candidates who are not from STEM backgrounds, there must be proven interest in the thematic focus of the Doctoral Academy.
- PhD candidates who have progressed to the research stage (post-proposal defense) or have completed one year of doctoral studies.
- Those committed to academic excellence, ethical research practice, leadership, and innovation.
- Special encouragement for female scholars and candidates with special needs.
- Applicants who declare expressly that they would participate fully in all five days of the Academy. Therefore, must show evidence of release from the supervisor/institution for the duration of the workshop.
Selection Criteria
All applications shall be assessed based on:
- Research clarity (problem identification and design) and potential impact (this must be explicit in the letter of motivation).
- Demonstrable commitment to scholarly development in alignment with the Academy’s objectives.
- Leadership potential and collaborative mindset.
- Inclusion and diversity considerations (discipline, gender and institutional representation).
NOTE: Selected participants must commit to attending the full five-day programme.
