Unveiling Creativity: 16 Days of Activism Culminates in a Transforming Conference on Gender Equity, Dec 10

Behind the Scenes (BTS), Nigeria joined the world on a 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Inequity campaign. The campaign has sparked conversations, fostered creativity, and inspired action. Each day has brought with it unique opportunities to address pressing issues, connect with diverse voices, and reimagine a more equitable creative sector.

The journey began with an engaging Instagram Live session via @behindthescenesnigeria, shining a spotlight on digital violence and cyberbullying. It has been using vibrant social media campaigns and impactful publicity walks to carry the message to the streets. The power of the arts has come alive in live poetry sessions, offering a space for raw emotions and bold statements. Art therapy workshops plan to provide healing and self-expression, while a stunning art exhibition is to showcase the creativity and resilience of diverse voices in the sector.

This campaign is part of the larger project, BEHIND THE SCENES: Young Women and Gender-Based Inequities in Africa’s Creative Sector, spearheaded in Nigeria by Dr. Michael Kunnuji and Dr. Florence Nweke from the Departments of Sociology and Creative Arts respectively, University of Lagos, in collaboration with esteemed partners such as the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) and funded by the MasterCard Foundation.

As these powerful 16 days draw to a close, all eyes turn to the grand finale – a transformative conference scheduled for Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at the Faculty of Social Sciences, UNILAG.

The conference will feature a powerful keynote address, a thought-provoking panel discussion with experts addressing gender-based inequity in the creative sector, an interactive workshop where participants will develop practical strategies for fostering equity, and a Creative Showcase which will highlight performances and art that challenge societal norms. The day will end with a Networking Mixer, which will offer opportunities for connection, collaboration, and building lasting relationships within the creative industry.

The University community and general public are cordially invited.
