As part of activities to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their class, and give back to the institution that nurtured them, members of the 1984 Alumni set of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos (UNILAG) have donated state-of-the-art internet connectivity infrastructure to their alma mater.
The handing-over ceremony of the internet connectivity project which includes cable LAN devices and 21 wireless access point installations covering offices and classrooms within the Department took place on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.
The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Adelaja Odukoya who represented the UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS at the event commended the 1984 Alumni Class for their generosity. He described the gesture as a remarkable symbol of the innovation being recorded by the University as a result of the synergy with its alumni.
His words, “This donation demonstrates the power of alumni engagement and commitment to the growth of our institution. We are grateful for your contributions to the development of our University. You have set a shining example for future generations to follow, demonstrating the impact of alumni support on the advancement of education. People like you have shown to us that with your support we can continue to be the University of First Choice. I dare to say that we have surpassed just being called an institution of choice rather we have become the University with the best products.”
Similarly, the Head of Department of Mass Communication, Prof. Oloruntola Sunday expressed appreciation to the donors for their immense support and contributions to the department, over the years. He added that “the donation which was timely and apt will significantly enhance the department’s capacity to produce well-rounded graduates equipped with the skills to excel in the digital age”.
In his remarks, President of the 1984 Alumni set, Mr. Fred Ohwawha described the internet connectivity project as his set’s commitment to efforts aimed at boosting the department’s research and learning capabilities, as well as enhancing student’s ability to compete favourably with their counterparts anywhere in the world, even after graduation.
His words “We are proud to give back to the department that shaped us into the professionals we are today. For us this move means a lot to us all as it is also to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the class.”
