March 8, 2024 was a beautiful day dedicated to the celebration of the invaluable contributions of women to the society, and the University of Lagos Women Society was not left out as it organised a special celebration in commemoration of International Women’s Day.

The President of the Society and Director, Arthur Mbanefo Digital Research Centre (AMDRC), Dr. Taiwo Ipaye, in her opening speech, expressed gratitude to the Society’s  ceremonies committee for organizing the event and honoring the founding mothers of the University of Lagos Women Society School – Chief (Mrs.) Christie Ade-Ajayi and Chief (Mrs.) Titi Odugbemi. Dr. Ipaye highlighted the importance of honoring those who laid the foundation for the society, pledging to uphold their legacy.

Members of the Society, Dr. Ndubuisi and Prof. Nwokoro also commended the committee and emphasized the need for greater participation from younger members.

The event was graced by esteemed female principal officers of the University, including the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Ayodele Atsenuwa); Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics & Research), Prof. Bola Oboh; Acting Registrar, Mrs. Olakunle Makinde; Bursar, Mrs. Olufunmilola Adekunle and the University Librarian, Prof. Yetunde Zaid.

While addressing members of the society present, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ogunsola underscored the pivotal role of women in societal progress. Making reference to historical examples such as Queen Amina of Zaria, Efunsetan Aniwura, and Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Prof. Ogunsola encouraged women to fearlessly pursue leadership positions with strength and valor. She urged women to celebrate their little wins and those of other women.

She pointed out the importance of investing in women, promoting equity, and amplifying the voices of women, noting that without the contributions of successful women to any society, its foundation would crumble.

She applauded the continuous dedication of women to the growth and development of the ULWS Nursery and Primary School. She stated that in the face of challenges, women always rise, and thus encouraged the women to be unstoppable, especially in the attainment of greatness regardless of what life throws at them.

Prof. Ogunsola challenged women to change the way they think and perceive themselves.

The event also featured thrilling performances by students of the ULWS Nursery and Primary School. These included an endearing mimic of the Vice-Chancellor and cultural performances celebrating women’s resilience and cultural diversity.

Awards of recognition for significant contributions to the Society were presented to the special guests of honor and former presidents of the Society – Chief (Mrs.) Christie Ade-Ajayi (pioneer President, 1972-1978); Chief Mrs. Titi Odugbemi (2007-2010) and Prof. Ngozi Osarenren (July 2012- December 2012) represented by her daughter, Miss Efosa Osarenren. Other past presidents and members of the Society – Mrs. Ibidapo-Obe, Mrs. Bello, Mrs. Ogundipe and Mrs. Ofonagoro were also recognized and celebrated. A minute silence was observed for departed members – Mrs. Jegede, Mrs. Alao and Mrs. Biobaku, in acknowledgment of their enduring impact.

The celebration was rounded off with heartfelt gratitude and words of advice from the founding mothers, a joyous photo session and dancing to cool music.
