UNILAG ORIENTATION PROGRAMME DAY 2: Lagos Deputy Governor Makes Surprise Appearance, Charges Students to Safeguard Future Goals

Day 2 of the Orientation Programme for newly admitted students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) took an electrifying turn with the surprise appearance of the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, on Tuesday, January 30, 2024.

Palpable excitement coursed through the Jelili Omotola Hall, venue of the ongoing programme, as the students gave a standing ovation and cheered in appreciation of the august presence of the Deputy Governor.

A very relaxed and well-at-home Dr. Hamzat interacted with the students and congratulated them on their successful admission into UNILAG, which he described as “one of the best universities in Africa”.

With an address titled, “Preparing for Today to Safeguard your Future Aspirations and Goals”, the Deputy Governor charged the students to seize this moment in their lives to build the foundation of a flourishing future.

“To ensure that your dreams materialise, it is important that you adopt a proactive approach that will prepare you for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead of you. In life, there are the Good and the Bad; but you must tailor your life toward the good path”, he said.

Dr. Hamzat urged the students to grow in character, scholarship, and skills. He encouraged them to identify worthy mentors whose pool of experience they can draw from and leverage to their advantage.

“Who are your role models? Who do you want to be like? What did they do to achieve their current status? Find out. You must also know that there is no shortcut to success. Hence, there is a need for self-discipline, focus, and healthy craving for success on your part”.

He charged the students to do their parents proud with their commitment to excellence, and also promised to be present at their Convocation.

“You are lucky to be admitted by this great institution; and I assure you that you are in good hands. Make up your mind to do your parents and guardians proud. Wherever I am, if the Vice-Chancellor invites me to your graduation, I will be there”.

On hand to accompany Deputy Governor Hamzat to the event were the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Lucian Chukwu; and the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Musa Obalola.

The Deputy Governor had, upon arrival in the University, paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor at her 11th Floor, Senate House Office.

The Orientation Programme continues on Wednesday, January 31 and will end on Sunday, February 4, 2024 with a Special Thanksgiving Service at the University of Lagos Chapel of Christ Our Light.
