The second edition of the University of Lagos Environmental Sustainability Challenge formally kicked off on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 with a campus-wide sensitisation campaign.
Composed of volunteers at the UNILAG Green Hub and some members of the University of Lagos Green Club, the campaign train took off from the Faculty of Science, informing students and passers-by of the commencement of the challenge and the benefits that await them when they sign up for participation.
The Project Lead of the challenge, Dr. Abdulganiyu Adelopo of the Department of Works and Physical Planning led the train.
In his words, “UNILAG Sustainability Challenge 2.0 promises to be much more interesting. With Sustainability Challenge 1.0 last semester, we were able to recycle 250,000 plastic bottles. For this semester, we want to triple it. We are targeting 750,000 plastic bottles, and it is possible with the active collaboration of every member of the University community”.
At the Faculty Management Sciences, the Dean, Prof. A. A. Sulaimon received the campaign train with much enthusiasm. He commended their efforts in popularising eco-friendly knowledge on campus and charged students of the faculty to sign up for challenge. He promised to mobilise support for the challenge and to personally participate therein.
“There a lot of opportunities in Nigeria, and initiatives such as this are eye-openers to that fact. I am of the strong opinion that nobody should be jobless in Nigeria, if only we will dare to do here what many people fly abroad to do. By participating in this challenge, you will earn good rewards and contribute to making the environment cleaner. That is a win-win situation”.
The Faculties of Arts, Education, Engineering, and Law are some of the other places on campus that the campaign train took the message of a Cleaner UNILAG to with much zeal and fanfare. It also did a road walk to the Main Gate.
This year, the UNILAG Sustainability Challenge 2.0 introduces the “Recycle Bottles 4 Drink” incentive, an innovative approach to enhance waste recycling on campus.
Participants can earn rewards based on the number of plastic bottles they collect, with the following incentives:
• 40 Plastic Bottles: A Bottle of Drink
• 500 Plastic Bottles: A Pack of Water or Meal Ticket
• 1000 Plastic Bottles: A Pack of Soft Drink
Members of the university community are encouraged to join Sustainability Challenge 2.0 by signing up here. It promises to be fun and rewarding.
Sign up now and become a positive force for environmental impact.
