Experts Task New Generation of Medical Students on Technology Use for Improvement of Healthcare Delivery

The Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder of HadielInsurTech, Dr. Tunde Salako has tasked the new generation of medical students on the use of technology for revolutionising healthcare delivery and accessibility in Nigeria. 

He gave the charge at the Stack Reform Conference 2023 organized by KB Klub, University of Lagos (UNILAG). The Conference is one of the twin activities scheduled for November 2023 under the 54thAcademic and Philanthropic events of the socio-philanthropic club.

Held at the prestigious J.F. Ade.Ajayi Auditorium, UNILAG, the conference featured panel discussions on emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities within various sectors. It served as a space for young innovators to showcase their ideas, and an avenue to foster collaborations among young creatives and innovators.

Dr. Tunde Salako, who was the Keynote Speaker at the Conference, emphasized the need for collaborations between healthcare and FinTech sectors to improve access to quality healthcare services.

His paper titled:  Transforming Healthcare through Financial Technology gave insights on the intersection of healthcare and financial technology, as well as the potentials for transformative impact through innovative solutions. 

Dr. Salako highlighted ways financial technology could be leveraged to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and make healthcare services more accessible to underserved populations.

His words, “Data-driven decision making in healthcare is crucial and financial technology could play a pivotal role in leveraging data analytics to drive better patient outcomes and operational efficiency within our healthcare institutions”.

“Youths are the Future”

In her remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG and Chief Host of the Ceremony, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing challenges within the healthcare, health IT, and FinTech sectors.

She reiterated her administration’s-commitment to the creation of an enabling environment to encourage entrepreneurship and innovation among staff and students.Her words,“Today’s youths are technology-savvy and they own the future. There can be no future without the youths. The youthful spirit of daring and innovation is crucial in the search for solutions to the challenges facing various sectors of the country’s economy”.

In his remarks, Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine (CMUL), UNILAG, Prof. Osaretin Ebuehi who represented the CMULProvost, Professor Wale Oke, hailed the event as a culmination of weeks of proper planning by “students who are not only driven by their academic pursuit, but also the spirit of giving back to the society”.

He also thanked programme’s partners and sponsors for their immense support.

“The KB Klubhas Impacted Lives”

Earlier in his remarks, the Father of the Day who is also the Grand Patron and Founder of KB Klub, Prof. OladapoAshiruAshiru, OFR took the audience on a journey back to 1969, the founding year of the club.

According to him, “since its creation, KB Klub has significantly impacted lives and its philanthropic activities have become a reference point amongst many social clubs in Nigeria. The idea of giving back to the society is what brought about the Stack Conference and the Blood Drive initiative”.

While commending the club’s executives for a job well done, Prof. Ashiru encouraged the younger generation to be worthy role models within the society.

He used the occasion to present a plaque and a cheque of Two Hundred Thousand Naira to the winner of the Professor OladapoAshiru Prize for Best Anatomy Student, Mr. AdeyemoHabeeb who scored 87% at the last Medical Examination.

Competitions and Happy Winners

The highpoints of Stack Reform Conference 2023 included the Debate Competition among secondary schools students, Late Professor Ayodeji Femi-PearseEssay Competition, and Elevator Pitch Competition by young innovators.

Participants in the debate competition tested their wits on issues relating to healthcare, health IT, and FinTech, and CMS Grammar School, Barigawalked away with the grand prize of One Hundred Thousand Naira, while Miss Cassandra Nwokoro won the Late Professor Ayodeji Femi-Pearse Essay Competition and was awarded a cash prize of Fifty Thousand Naira.

Lumion Health, an organization which consists of CMUL students, emerged victorious at the end of the Elevator Pitch Competition. They got the grand prize of over Five Hundred Thousand Naira as well as offers of incubation period with the Entrepreneurship and Skills Development Center (ESDC),UNILAG, and Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF).

What Next? Blood Donation Drive!

The KB Klub is an exclusive socio-philanthropic club of male medical students in the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. The club was founded in 1969 by a group of seven (7) medical students: Dr. Abiodun Osinubi, Dr. Yomi Phillips, Dr. Femi Adegoke, Dr. Wole Fajembola, Dr. Timi Alabi, Dr. Akinbo, and headed by renowned reproductive endocrinologist, Professor Oladapo Ashiru, OFR, the first Keebite/President of the KB Klub. With the motto: TOGETHERNESS, the KB Klub stands on a tripod of Philanthropy, Academic excellence, and Social empowerment. 

The philanthropic activity under the 54th Academic and Philanthropic events of the club is the Blood Donation Drive slated for Friday, November 17, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the Indoor Sports Complex, Sports Center, UNILAG, Akoka

With the theme: Our Power to Gift Life, the initiative is aimed at significantly improving and addressing issues surrounding voluntary blood donation in the society is tagged.
