In a grand ceremony held on Thursday, October 25, 2023, at the premises of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Staff School, several pupils were badged as school prefects for the 2023/2024 Session of the School.
The new prefects include, among others, Master Yusuf Khalid and Miss. Wuraola Sunmonu who will serve as Head boy and Head girl, respectively while Master Ehimen Oseghale and Esther Innocent are the Assistant Head boy and Head girl, respectively.
Speaking during the ceremony which was attended by parents, teachers, and pupils of the prestigious school, the Acting Head Teacher, Mrs. E. A. Akinade described the event as a significant one to the pupils. She noted that the selection of the pupils to serve as prefects was based on their maturity, reliability, and ability to take on additional responsibilities.
According to her, being appointed as a prefect often brings a sense of pride and accomplishment to the pupils, as they are chosen by teachers and staff who believe in their capabilities.
The Acting Head Teacher also expressed delight with the massive turnout of parents for the badging ceremony. She announced the schedule of other events for the term, and urged parents to attend the events. Her words “as you have come to witness this particular celebration, I pray you witness more beautiful moments like this in the lives of the children as they grow.”
Another senior member of the school, Mrs. Omoloara Ige who oversees Basic 1 – 3 pupils, said prefectship provides an opportunity for personal growth and development of selected pupils. She posited that through the roles, the pupils will learn important life skills such as time management, organization, and teamwork.
Other supervisory teachers across different levels including Mrs. Okereke, Mrs. Idukpaye, and Mr. Otsemeuno all had words of motivation for the new prefects.
The announcement and badging of the new prefects which was received with cheers and excitement from the parents and pupils, was followed by the oath-taking ceremony performed by Barrister Nina Akpeli.
The event ended with a vote of thanks delivered by the mother of the Head Girl, Mrs. Ife Sunmonu who expressed appreciation to the school management.
