Monday, July 31, 2023 was an iconic day for the University of Lagos student body as the current Mr. UNILAG 2023, Mr. Inioluwa Oderinde handed over his pageantry title to the first-runner up of the competition, Mr. Joseph Onunkwo. The Change of Guard ceremony was held at the Dean of Student Affairs’ (DSA) office.

According to the Deputy Dean II, Dr. Blessing Anikwa who represented the DSA, Prof. Musa Obalola, this recent development is due to personal reasons by Mr. Inioluwa Oderinde. This development means that the 2nd runner-up of the competition, Mr. Chris Matthew, a 300-level student of Creative Arts will step in as the first runner-up.

Mr. Joseph Onunkwo, currently a 300-level student of Creative Arts will commence his tenure as Mr. UNILAG in the 2023/2024 academic session scheduled to begin in October 2023.
All unredeemed prizes yet to be handed over to Mr. Oderinde would be presented to Mr. Onunkwo, by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, at a later date.
The Change of Guard was witnessed by some representatives of the Mr & Miss UNILAG pageantry committee including: Head, UNILAG 103.1fm, Mr. Dimeji Lamu-Michael; Pageantry Director, Mr. “Balo” Balogun; Mrs. Mojisola Adebayo representing the Principal Assistant Registrar, DSA’s office, Mrs. E. Fakolade, and a second runner-up, Miss Habeebah Abubakar-Baba, a 400-level student of History and Strategic Studies.
It would be recalled that Mr. Inioluwa Oderinde, then a 200-level student of Economics and Miss Jecintha Oguejiofor, also a 200-level student of Mathematics were crowned Mr. and Miss UNILAG 2023 at a keenly contested pageantry in May, 2023.
