UNILAG Maths Dept Upholds Tradition of Monthly Seminar Series in May

The monthly tradition of the Department of Mathematics (DoM), University of Lagos (UNILAG) of hosting a seminar series to highlight the power and beauty of Mathematics continued on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at the Faculty of Science Boardroom, Main Campus, Akoka.

The seminar was graced by staff, students and friends of the Department as well as senior academics drawn from various faculties across the University including Engineering and Science.

In his paper titled “Mathematical Modeling: The Embodiment of Mathematics Applications”, Dr. Ayotunde Abayomi Ayoade of the Department of Mathematics stressed the power of mathematical modeling in guiding policy and decision makers to deliver quick decisions.

Below is the abstract of the paper presented by Dr. Ayoade:

A mathematical model is a representation of real-life phenomena with mathematical concepts and language to forecast their behaviors. A mathematical model has the power to guide the policy makers to take quick decisions regarding the problems arising from science, engineering, industry, and the society in general whether data are available or not.

Based on the application of mathematical modeling in decision making, mathematical models are built around two problems that arise from the society (inequality and economic backwardness) and the parameters of the model are used to state an important non-dimensional quantity that can guide the policy makers towards the eradication of the two problems without seeking for the data from the World Bank or from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) or National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The Department of Mathematics (DoM) Seminar Series is the focal point of the Department’s research culture and activity. The objective is to engage critically and constructively with current research from staff members, their external collaborators, invited speakers, and visiting researchers. Presentations concentrate on new research developments ranging from works in progress to recently published ones.

The next seminar series will be delivered by Dr. A. A. Abolarinwa on Thursday, June 29, 2023 at 10:00a.m. in the Faculty of Science Board Room. Members of the university community and general public are cordially invited.
