UNILAG@60: 53rd Convocation climaxes with Thanksgiving

Activities marking the 53rd Convocation Ceremonies of the University of Lagos climaxed on Sunday, January 22, 2023, with a Thanksgiving Service at the Chapel of Christ our Light on the UNILAG Campus, Akoka, Yaba.

Graced by members of management and some principal officers of the university all led by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Senator Prince (Dr) Lanre Tejuoso, the well-attended service was an avenue for the entire congregation to sing songs of praises and dance as a way of returning glory to God for the success of the 53rd Convocation Ceremonies as well as over the University of Lagos in the spirit of the ongoing Diamond Anniversary.

The thanksgiving service also gave room for special prayers for the entire UNILAG Community, management and all stakeholders as led by the Chaplain, Rev. Azuka Ogbolumani who also used the opportunity to congratulate Professor Folasade Ogunsola, FAS, on her investiture as the 13th and first female Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG which held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. Rev Ogbolumani, on behalf of the entire congregation, wished her success and gave assurances of their love, constant prayers, goodwill and support.

Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council, University of Lagos, Senator Prince (Dr) Lanre Tejuoso expressed his goodwill message in a worship song through which he committed the university into God’s hands anew for greater impact in the years and decades ahead.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, FAS, in her few words, thanked God for how far UNILAG has come in its six (6) decades of existence and prayed for the courage and enablement to pursue and achieve all the aspirations ahead with a view to making UNILAG Future-Ready.

The homily for the service titled “Love-Filled Life’’ was delivered by Professor Rev. Yemisi Obashoro-John, she also congratulated the entire management, staff and students of UNILAG on the 60th anniversary and charged the whole congregation to remain committed to the continued growth and development of UNILAG.

Prof Obashoro-John used the opportunity to caution against pride, arrogance and unforgiveness just as she implored the congregation to rededicate themselves to the good of others as an act of love ordained by God.

It would be recalled that activities marking the 53rd Convocation Ceremonies of the University of Lagos commenced with a Press Conference on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.

This was followed by the commissioning of Telemedicine booths at the College of Medicine, Idi Araba and a special Jumaat Service at the UNILAG Central Mosque on Friday, January 13, 2023.

The investiture ceremony of Professor Folasade Ogunsola, FAS, as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, followed by the Convocation lecture while a total of 2,251 Postgraduate students were conferred with different categories of degrees (65 Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.); 2,119 Master’s degrees and 67 Post Graduate Diplomas) at the Conferment of awards ceremony which held on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.

The ceremony also witnessed the award of Gold Medals to a celebrated Professor of Mathematics, Professor Johnson Olaleru and former Deputy Vice-Chancellor and a Theatre Guru of repute, Professor Duro Oni.
