UNILAG, Nigerian Film Corporation Pursue Collaborative Efforts to Run Masters Degree Programme in Film Culture & Archival Studies

Authorities of the University of Lagos and Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), Jos have stepped up efforts aimed at actualising the plans to commence a joint Masters degree programme in Film Culture and Archival Studies.

To this end, the Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Film Corporation, Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, accompanied by Ademiju Taofik Aderoju and Mrs. Adeola Sotimirin paid a courtesy visit to University of Lagos on Monday, November 7, 2022.

Dr. Maduekwe who was led to the Vice-Chancellor’s office by the University’s former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Management Services, Prof. Duro Oni and Head, Department of Mass Communication, Prof. Adepoju Tejumaye was received by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Professor Ayodele Atsenuwa on behalf of Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

According to Dr. Maduekwe, the visit to the university is to facilitate the processing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University and the Nigerian Film Corporation for the running of a Joint Masters Degree programme in Film Culture and Archival Studies.

He noted that the program will prepare students to become experts and global leaders in the fields of Film Culture Restoration, Digitization, Preservation, Codification, Classification of Creative Works and Audio-Visual Heritage.

Prof. Atsenuwa expressed excitement at his visit. She noted that an MoU on the offering of the programme in film culture and archival studies is a good step in the right direction, as a programme on library & information science and archival recovery was recently approved in the University. She also suggested that there be a way to open up the film industry to the field of science, such as chemical engineers researching how to better preserve films.

The Nigeria Film Corporation currently offers a Masters degree program in Film Culture and Archival Studies in collaboration with Nigerian institutions (University of Jos and Lagos Film Society) and German institutions (Goethe University, Frankfurt, Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art, Berlin, Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum).
