Learning activities at the Distance Learning Institute of the University of Lagos received a boost on Thursday, September 29, 2022, as the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, commissioned two new facilities to enhance equal opportunity and inclusivity among staff and students.
The facilities – an Equal Opportunities E- Resource Centre and a water storage, treatment and distribution plant – were provided by the management of the Institute, led by the Director, Professor Uchenna Udeani.
In her Welcome Address, Professor Udeani showered encomium on the Vice-Chancellor for being the inspiration behind the E-Resource Centre and for the constant support of Management for the Institute.
“The inspiration for the Equal Opportunities Resource Centre came from an encounter of the Vice-Chancellor with a physically challenged candidate who came to sit for assessment at the e-resource centre situated on the Second Floor”, the Director said.
“He noted the struggle his friends had with taking him up the staircase in his wheelchair. Then he whispered to my ears, “Director, is this global practices-compliant?” I promptly answered, “No, Sir!”, and got to work”.
The Equal Opportunities E-Resource Centre is a digital training and assessment centre specifically created to cater to the learning needs of students with special needs. It is fitted with CCTV cameras for surveillance security and internet-connected devices to facilitate learning for its users.
“We have revamped the water storage and distribution system of the Institute, so that our students can learn in a conducive and hygienic environment. We have also provided an Ablution Area for the use of our Muslim members of staff and students.”, Professor Udeani affirmed.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, congratulated the Distance Learning Institute and its leadership for the progress the Institute had made in many areas.
“The Distance Learning Institute of the University of Lagos is the best of its kind in the country; and that is because of the diligent work that its members of staff and leadership put in”, he said.
He reeled out the many achievements of the Institute under its current leadership in terms of physical and personnel development and charged them to not rest on their oars.
Other dignitaries present at the event include the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Professor Lucian Chukwu; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Research) Professor Bola Oboh; University Librarian, Professor Yetunde Zaid; Registrar, Oladejo Azeez, Esq.; and the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Mopelola Olusakin among others.
