UNILAG VC Commends Students for Outstanding Performance at Lagos State Green Furniture Programme

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, has commended two exceptional students of the institution who distinguished themselves at the Green Furniture Programme, an innovative social experiment that blends fashion, sustainability, and environmental responsibility.

The two students, Mr. Nurudeen Ogundipe of the Department of Psychology and Mr. Quareeb Kako, a student of Chemical Engineering, emerged as 2nd and 3rd place winners, respectively, at the Lagos State Government-powered competition.

Mr. Ogundipe earned his recognition for creating green chairs made entirely from recycled materials, demonstrating both creativity and environmental consciousness. Mr. Kako, on the other hand, developed a prototype toilet system equipped with a bio-digester, capable of converting organic waste into two valuable by-products: cooking gas and organic fertiliser. Though, still at the prototype stage, his innovation has been praised for its potential to support affordable, sustainable sanitation solutions.

The students were presented to the University Management on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, by the Coordinator of the Green Hub Initiative, Dr. Abdul Ganiyy Adelopo. The visit coincided with the UNILAG Green Awards, an annual ceremony dedicated to recognizing and appreciating students, faculty members, and departments that have demonstrated exceptional commitment to sustainability efforts since its inception five years ago. Professor Ogunsola commended both students for their innovation and creativity, describing their achievements as a testament to the University’s culture of excellence and its growing reputation as a hub for environmentally responsive ideas. She pledged the University’s continued support for groundbreaking student-led solutions that address pressing societal challenges.
