UNILAG QAS 4th Quarter Seminar Amplifies Calls for Ethical Excellence and Anti-Corruption Compliance in Higher Education

The University of Lagos re-affirmed its commitment to accountability, transparency, and service excellence as its Quality Assurance and SERVICOM (QAS) Unit held the Fourth Quarter 2025 Seminar on Thursday, November 27, 2025, at the Senate Chamber, Senate House.

The seminar, themed: Strengthening Ethical Practice and Integrity in Quality Assurance and Service Delivery in Higher Education: The Role of Anti-Corruption Committee, formed part of ongoing efforts to deepen ethical consciousness across the University and enhance compliance with national anti-corruption standards.

In his keynote address, Chairman of the University’s Anti-Corruption and Transparency Committee (ACTC), Professor H. O. Olaniyan, offered an illuminating perspective on the responsibilities of Anti-Corruption Committees in modern academic institutions.

He explained that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) mandates the establishment of Anti-Corruption and Transparency Units (ACTU) in all ministries, departments, and agencies to strengthen institutional ethics and ensure integrity in public service.

Professor Olaniyan noted that the ACTC of UNILAG has proactively adopted several measures to align with ICPC expectations. These measures, he said, aim to position the institution for full compliance while reinforcing a culture of transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct.

The seminar’s technical session, which followed the Keynote Address, provided further depth to the conversation.

TECHNICAL SESSION
The technical session featured the two presentations:

  1. Ethical Practice and Compliance in Quality Assurance Framework by Professor Esther Makinde (Department of Surveying and Geoinformatics, UNILAG), and
  2. Transparency and Accountability as Drivers of Service Excellence in Universities by Mrs. Adebimpe Oroleke(Deputy Bursar, Treasury Unit, UNILAG)

The first presentation highlighted the role of ethical behaviour as the backbone of sound quality assurance processes. It emphasized that institutions thrive when their systems are built on fairness, diligence, and responsibility.

On the other hand, the second presentation examined the importance of transparent financial practices and accountable administrative systems as essential factors to sustain trust and service excellence in university management.

The highly interactive session exposed participants to the practical expectations of the ICPC regarding anti-corruption structures, reporting channels, compliance checks, and the roles staff must play in safeguarding the University’s values.

During a robust question-and-answer segment, participants engaged the speakers on several issues and sought clarifications on compliance procedures, ethical expectations for departments among others. The session further enriched the discourse and deepened participants’ understanding of their roles in sustaining ethical practices.

Delivering the remarks of the Director, Quality Assurance and SERVICOM (QAS), Professor… Saibu, at the end of the two presentations, the Deputy Director of QAS, Dr. Eno Akarawak expressed gratitude to the speakers and participants.

Dr. Akarawak noted that “seminars such as this are essential for building a service-driven academic community grounded in integrity”. She reiterated the Unit’s unwavering commitment to promoting ethical excellence across the University.

Attendees also expressed appreciation for the clarity, relevance, and timeliness of the discussions, affirming that the knowledge gained would contribute significantly to promoting an ethical, transparent, and service-driven University of Lagos.
