The first ever University of Lagos Annual Robotics Competition was held on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, inside the Jelili Adebisi Omotola Halls.

The Coordinator of the event and a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Computer Sciences, Dr Chika Yinka-Banjo said that the essence of organizing the programme was to create awareness and spread the news on the need for people to start recognizing that the digital space is working at a fast pace and the need to move just as fast with it in terms of the use of digital gadgets and innovations.

She said that the competition is a platform that will help those willing to know more about Robotics and at the same time participate in it. The functionalities of robots was also explained as well as what the country starts to gain. She stated emphatically, that it will help in the area of surveillance with regards security, and sometimes could be of help in domestic/official duties.

The Competition which featured eight (8) teams with each coming up with their own variants of traditionally looking robots was quite competitive. The teams explained how their robots would move through the maze. Each team was given an average of 3 minutes to have the robot move from the starting point all the way to the end. At the end, Team Overrides emerged the winner of the competition and was awarded N75,000.

It would be recalled that the Federal Government approved the establishment of a new agency for establishment for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence as the country begins work on strategic policy blueprint to commit more resources to research in Science and Technology.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS, while fielding questions from newsmen posited that the use of robots will not increase employment as perceived by some but will help improve the innovative ideas of the average workforce.
