As a testament to the success of the P3P Strategy of the Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe Administration, a brand new floor – with facilities to boot – has been added to the Faculty of Law building.
Courtesy of the philanthropy of distinguished statesman, Alhaji Femi Okunnu, SAN, CON, LL.D, what had stood as a three-storey building for about 45 years – with increasingly inadequate facilities – has now become a more spacious edifice, able to accommodate the continuing growth of the Law degree programme at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Professor Ayo Atsenuwa, Dean of the Faculty of Law, showered praises on the duo of the Donor, Alhaji Okunnu, and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, at the occasion. She recalled the time when the UNILAG Law programme risked being dis-accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on account of not having an adequate Moot Court, a threat she escalated to the Vice-Chancellor.
“The reason we are here today is because the Vice-Chancellor understood the import of that warning”, she said.
She appreciated the Vice-Chancellor for the alacrity with which he mobilised support for the project and the Donor for his generosity. These, according to her, have put the UNILAG Faculty of Law in a safe and secure place concerning consequent accreditation exercises.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS, gave kudos to the Donor, Alhaji Okunnu, who he said, at 88, keeps showing his undying passion for quality education. He praised the Donor’s ready support for his P3P Strategy on the platform of which he chose to adopt the vertical extension of the Faculty of Law building as the project to be donated to the university. He further explained that under the P3P Strategy, the University of Lagos has been able to attract committed funding from friends and alumni of the university for the construction and renovation of facilities on campus, even in the face of limited finances.
The P3P Strategy is the “Pick a Project, Pick a Programme, Pick a Person” Public-Private Partnership model through which Professor Ogundipe has been attracting critical support for the academic, research and infrastructural needs of the University of Lagos.
Although represented on the ground by Professor Adele Jinadu, Alhaji Okunnu made a virtual appearance at the event. He expressed gratitude to God for the privilege to be able to give back to society and to be able to leave a legacy of service. He encouraged other friends and alumni of the University of Lagos to follow suit.
A 180-seater capacity Moot Court, two 70-seater capacity seminar rooms, a Judge’s Chamber, a Lawyers’ Changing Room, an administrative office, one boardroom and eight professorial offices with conveniences are some of the facilities that the new floor provides.
