The Institute of African and Diaspora Studies (lADS), University of Lagos (UNILAG) is pleased to announce that Dr. Adebayo Kudus Oluwatoyin has emerged as the winner of the first edition of the Rahamon Bello Best PhD Thesis in African & Diaspora Studies Award. Dr. Adebayo’s thesis, entitled “Migration and Settlement Experiences of Nigerians in Guangzhou, China,” was one of a total of 29 theses received from Nigeria, South Africa and Cameroon.
Dr. Adebayo bagged his doctorate from the University of Ibadan and he is currently a Research Fellow II at the Institute of African Studies, University of lbadan, Ibadan, Nigeria. At the award presentation ceremony, which comes up on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at the Institute of African & Diaspora Studies, J. P. Clark Building, Dr. Adebayo will be presented with a certificate and the cash prize of US $1,000.00.
Also at the event, the first runner-up, Dr. Abiodun Muyideen Bello, from the University of Lagos, Akoka and the second runner-up, Dr. Nonzuzo Mbakazi from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, will be recognised and presented with certificates.
The Rahamon Bello Best PhD Thesis in African & Diaspora Studies Award was instituted to encourage the emergence of more detailed and focused contemporary scholarship in African Studies that pushes back the theoretical and practical frontiers of research in our universities. Also quite importantly, the award, endowed by the person for whom it is named, aims to honour the 11th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Rahamon Bello.
The next edition of the Rahamon Bello Best PhD Award will be announced before the end of the first quarter of 2021. Interested applicants whose PhD theses were completed within the last two years should visit http://iads.unilag.edu.ng for necessary information.
