UNILAG Unveils and Rewards Weekly Winners of Ongoing Sustainability Challenge

The University of Lagos is matching words with action concerning its commitment to becoming Nigeria’s leading Green Campus.

It demonstrated this on April 5 and 12, 2023 when, on both days, winners of Week 1 and 2 were rewarded respectively.

On Wednesday, April 5, Mrs Akande Tawakalitu emerged overall winner of Week 1 with a total of 2,327 points (bottles). She won the Cash Prize of N5,000. She entered the Challenge in the Staff Category.

Mr. Adebayo Oladapo emerged as First Runner-Up, in the Staff Category, with 1,370 points (bottles).

Ms. Bolarinwa Zainab emerged as the Student Champion of Week 1 with 1,021 points, while Ms. Adelakun Sumayyah emerged as First Runner Up with 863 points.

On ground to present the awards to the winners was the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Musa Obalola. He commended the winners for their participation in the challenge and encouraged them to increase their contribution to the good cause.

On Wednesday, April 12, it came to the turn of the Ag. Director of Works, Engineer Johnson Akiwande, to reward winners of Week 2.

At the premises of the Works and Physical Planning Department, Mrs Opebajo Nofisat was rewarded with the Cash Prize of N5,000 after racking up 3, 361 points to emerge as Winner of Week 2.

Mrs Akande Tawakalitu was First Runner-Up in the Staff Category for Week 2 with 2,149 points, while Mrs Azeez Olayinka emerged the Second Runner-Up with 892 points.

For the Student Category, Ms. Adelakun Sumayyah stepped up her game from the previous week to emerge the Student Champion of Week 2. She racked up 2,081 points.

Ms. Faeji Oluwatoka posted 1,500 points to emerge as the 1st Runner-Up, while Ms. Azeez Moyosoreoluwa emerged as the 2nd Runner-Up with 1,025 points.

The Project Lead of the Sustainability Challenge, Dr. Abdulganiyu Adelopo expressed delight at the level of acceptance that the Sustainability Challenge has received among members of the university community. He disclosed that, since the Challenge commenced on March 16, 2023, a total of 46, 719 plastic bottles had been collected: 18, 154 in Week 1 and 28,565 in Week 2.

The University of Lagos Environmental Sustainability Challenge is an all-of-campus drive to track, collect, and recycle 1.5 million plastic bottles on campus. It is part of efforts to involve all members of the community in the ongoing celebration of University of Lagos’ 60th Anniversary, and it aims to increase community participation in sustainable waste management practices on campus.

The Challenge continues till the end of the Semester.
