The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has taken a significant step towards reinforcing academic standards by organising a two-day training seminar for Examination Officers from all departments and faculties.
The event, which was held from Wednesday, October 9 to Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the Faculty of Science Board Room, had the theme, “Protecting Academic Standards: Examination Officers’ Roles and Responsibilities.”
Spearheaded by the UNILAG Staff Training & Development Unit, the seminar aimed to equip Examination Officers with the essential skills and knowledge to maintain the integrity of the university’s examination processes. It highlighted the institution’s commitment to continuous improvement and adaptation in the face of evolving academic challenges.
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics and Research), Professor Bola Oboh, who represented.the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folashade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, at the event, revealed that the seminar was organised in response to identified gaps in the handling of examination misconduct cases.
Her words, “…we discovered that some Examination Officers do not have a road map of what to do and how to do it. When issues of examination misconduct arise, a lot of loopholes come into play”
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor explained that the University Management decided to ensure an annual training of Examination Officers, as well as provision of an Examination Policy that will serve as a comprehensive guide for examination officers in discharging their duties effectively..
While underscoring the significance of the training, Professor Oboh emphasised the importance of dedication to duty, and encouraged networking among participants to foster collaboration across faculties and departments.
The seminar featured experienced facilitators who have worked extensively in the examination space. Their sessions were designed to be interactive, providing participants with practical insights into conducting examinations correctly, ensuring timely release of results, and protecting students’ interests.
Structured into eight sections over the two days, the programme concluded with an interactive session led by the Director of the Staff Training and Development Unit, Mrs. J. Aderonke Asiwaju. This final segment allowed participants to consolidate their learning and address any remaining questions or concerns.
By investing in the professional development of its Examination Officers, UNILAG demonstrates its dedication to maintaining high academic standards and fostering a culture of integrity within its examination processes. This initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the overall quality of education and student experience at the University of Lagos.
