Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the post of University Librarian, which will be vacant in the University by Friday, March 14, 2025. The appointment of a new University Librarian is in accordance with the Provisions of the University of Lagos Act, 1967; The Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1993; The Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amended) Act, 2003 and The Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amended) Act, 2012.
THE INSTITUTION
The University of Lagos was established in 1962, by an Act of Parliament of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to encourage the advancement of learning. Located in the urban and commercial city of Lagos, it has its main campus in Akoka and two other campuses in Yaba and Idi-Araba. The University caters for both full-time and part-time students and has an overall population of over fifty-eight thousand students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It has staff strength of about four thousand. The University of Lagos, a highly reputable institution, has a College of Medicine, twelve Faculties, six Institutes, nineteen Research Centres, and several Centres of Excellence, School of Postgraduate Studies and the University of Lagos Business School (ULBS).
THE POSITION
The University Librarian is a Principal Officer of the University and is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the administration of the University Library and the coordination of all library services in the University.
For the vacant post, the University seeks candidates with vision, proven academic distinction, managerial ability, integrity and requisite professional skills and competence. The candidate must be innovative and should understand the nature and dynamics of the best practices in the provision of academic library services.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Candidates must possess a good Honour’s degree in Library and Information Science or related field, Master and Ph.D. degrees in Library and Information Science from a recognized university. He/she must be certified by the Librarian’s Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN). In addition, the candidate must be Information and Communication Technology (ICT) proficient. The candidate should possess and demonstrate skills including, Strategic Planning, Collection Development, Staff Management, Copyright and Intellectual Property, Analytical and Problem Solving, Critical Thinking and Creativity, Financial Responsibility, Self-Management and Social Responsibility, amongst others.
Candidates must also have at least fifteen (15) years cognate experience in University Library services, ten (10) of which must be at senior management level. A substantial number of scholarly publications, both in quality and quantum, in reputable international and national journals, is required. Candidate must demonstrate and provide strong academic and administrative leadership. The candidate should not be below the rank of a Reader Librarian /Deputy University Librarian. The candidate should not be more than sixty-five (65) years by Friday, March 14, 2025.
TENURE
The successful candidate shall hold office for a period of five (5) years from the effective date of appointment with additional one (1) year subject to satisfactory performance as may be determined by the appropriate University laws and the Governing Council of the University of Lagos.
SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The remuneration and other conditions of service are as applicable to the post of a University Librarian of all Federal Universities in Nigeria and as may be determined from time to time by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the University’s Governing Council as appropriate.
