UNILAG Fire Service Continues Sensitization Campaign

In continuation of its effort to demonstrate fire safety compliance and best practices to members of the university community, the University of Lagos Fire Service (UFS) held a fire drill and sensitization session for students of the Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Science on Tuesday, April 18 2023.

Head of the Fire Services Unit, Mr. Wasiu Jimoh, explained that the campaign was initiated to expose members of the University community to information on ways of preventing fire outbreaks, and role of volunteer responders in small fire emergencies.

His words “…the program is not just about fire drills but to prepare and train the community for fire prevention and emergency response.

During the sensitization which involved theory and practical aspect, Mr. Jimoh noted that the safety of the UNILAG community is of top priority, and as such, the university is committed to ensuring an environment and culture of safety through the Fire Safety Program.

The theory part which held at one of the laboratories at the Faculty of Science, was led by Fireman Ayodeji Oyelami who shared practical and relatable experiences to teach and guide the students on effective action that can often make the difference between a small incident and a catastrophic emergency.  

He took the students through Fire Safety Education and Training, Fire Safety Training Goals, and Proper Handling and Storage Procedures for Flammable and Combustible Materials

At the UFS station on campus where the practical session was held, students were shown several tips to curb fire outbreaks.

The Deputy Director, Quality Assurance and SERVICOM, Dr. Ayodele Omotayo who was part of the exercise, expressed satisfaction on the fire campaign programme. She averred that ‘Environmental Health and Safety Training’ formed part of the designed curriculum to support the University’s mission and values of sustaining and enhancing a safe and healthy environment.
