Description :

The Faculty runs a 4-year (i.e. eight semesters) degree programme through the course unit system. Limited opportunities are however available for a 3-year (i.e. six semesters) degree programme for candidates who possess the GCE (Advance Level), National Certificate of Education (NCE), or any other equivalent qualifications. Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree programmes are offered in the following seven disciplines: English, French, History, Philosophy, Igbo, Yoruba, Russian and Creative Arts (Theatre, Visual and Music). Other subjects offered as Minor and/or Elective are Linguistics and Italian. The Postgraduate programmes of the Faculty rank among the best in any Nigerian University. The Master of Arts programmes in English (Language and Literature), French, History, Philosophy, Igbo and Yoruba are run as course-work with examination and project writing in one calendar year. The M.Phil and PhD programmes are research-based degrees with appropriate course-work/seminar requirements. Professionally oriented courses in Translation and Interpretation in French, in English and Communication Skills, in French are also available in the Faculty. The Faculty language laboratory and Department equipment service the Languages Programme.

History :

The Faculty of Arts comprises six Departments: Linguistics, African and Asian Studies, Creative Arts, English, History and Strategic Studies, European Languages and Philosophy. Established in 1964 as the School of Humanities, it was redesignated Faculty of Arts in 1975 in a reorganization exercise which merged the then School of African and Asian Studies with the School of Humanities.
